Abstract

Joint cartilage is found among vertebrates like any other permanent or temporary skeletal component. In man, in a very early phase of the foetal life the skeleton is mainly cartilaginous, but in the adulthood the cartilage persists only in synovial joints, in laryngeal, tracheal and main bronchial walls, in nose and auricular pavilions, in epiglottis and as small isolated areas located in the skull basis. Although the cartilage is a reparable tissue, the complete regeneration of the normal joint cartilage is not possible. Recently several techniques of inadequate cartilage repairing as abrasive chondroplastia, subchondral bone fracture, and autogenic cartilage transplantation have been reported.
