Abstract

Neurologists define the stroke as a focal cerebral dysfunction (focal neurological deficit) with a sudden appearance and caused by a cerebral artery vascular event. World Health Organisation consider that the stroke is a complex heterogenic syndrome, defined by focal or global clinical signs with a rapid development, more than 24 hours in duration until death and leaking apparent nonvascular causes. Stroke is the third cause of death, after cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The two main forms of stroke, ischemic (85% in frequency) and haemorrhagic (15%) are almost impossible to differentiate on clinical examination. Strokes are life threatening conditions in which a rapid but adequate evaluation and subsequent appropriate therapeutic approach are crucial.
