Abstract

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases represent the main cause of death in modern society. Primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases is consecutively a major public health problem of nowadays and its main objective is atherogenic risk factors impact reduction. The main objectives and therapeutic goals of primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are stated in guidelines of The European Society of Cardiology (ESC), The European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) and The European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and also in guidelines of national cardiology societies, in accordance with the European statements. The European guidelines elaborated in 1994, 1998 and 2003 consider secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases as a major objective of health policy, in which guidelines’ implementation in clinical practice is crucial for cardiovascular events risk reduction, better life expectancy and improving life quality in patients with cardiovascular disorders.
