Abstract

The concept of “dental medicine” appeared after the Renaissance. The paper tries to present crucial discoveries which determined transformation I dental medicine development, represented by famous scientists as Anthony van Leuvenhoek (1632-1723), the discoverer of the microscope, Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) who described for the first time the enamel prismatic structure, John Hunter (1728-1793), Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761), etc. Despite the opposition of most of the researchers, the galenic theory of the tooth structure was replaced by new, scientific based theories.
