Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to offer an introduction into the evolution and spread of smoking habits. Tobacco, a widespread plant all over the world, seems to go back to ancient times, according to Herodotus. The history of tobacco begins with Columbus's discovery of America, who then brought the plant to Europe. It was the Turks who brought it into Romania around the middle of the 16th century. A serious health threat nowadays, tobacco is nonetheless a very profitable business for many.
