Abstract

The study refers to the echo of the German medical science made in the two Romanian Princedoms, marking out the publishing of the German medical findings in the Romanian medical newspapers. Thus, these newspapers have published complete translations or abstracts of the specialty articles found in German publications, pieces of documents and monographers, and also translations of some well-known German professors’ lectures. The most important newspapers that had interest in this domain were “The Romanian Doctor” (started in 1859, “The medical paper” (1862-1869), “Hospitals medical and surgical magazine”, and “Medical Romania”. In these papers, articles were published not only by the celebrities of “the new Viennese medical school” like doctor Leopold Kugel but also by Romanian doctors famous in Vienna, such as professor Carl Ludwig Sigmund in Sighisoara. It is marked out that both German and French medical schools had success in Romania, the Romanian doctors having an active demeanour regarding the controversies between them. Romanian doctors specialized in Germany and Austria, as well as the students maintained a permanent scientific contact with the Romanian medical community, and they started a students’ organization – “The Society of Young Romanians in Berlin”. Names like Victor Babeş, Gheorghe Marinescu, Thoma Ionescu, Dimitrie Gerda, and Nicolae Kalinderu were well known in specialized organizations of Germany.
