Abstract

Dr. Jacob Czihak was born in Bavaria. He studied medicine in Heidelberg and moved in 1827 to Moldavia. In Jassy he could rise in a few years from a refugee to a well-known doctor. In the year 1830, he founded a book club together with others a book club, which became the germ cell of the princely Moldavian natural scientific and medicine society in Jassy – which was founded in the year 1833 by Dr. Czihak and Dr. Zotta. His scientific activity goes on with the foundation of den natural historic museum and to author one of the first scientific books in Romanian language: “Istoria naturala” in the year 1837, last but not least he published a lot of other books and scientific articles during his career. From 1830 on, he held close contact to the scientific developments in Europe by writing hundreds of letters to all kinds of doctors and scientists, most of them in German. He brought a lot of modern ideas and the scientific way of life of the beginning scientific revolution of the 19th century. Century to Jassy and inspire a couple of generations of scientists there, till today. 186,7 he was made a posthumous honorary member of the Romanian academic society.
