Abstract

Abortion-related deaths result primarily from sepsis and are widespread in developing countries where abortion is illegal or inaccessible. The diagnosis of septic abortion should be considered when women of reproductive age present to health facilities with vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal pain, and fever. Women with septic complications of abortion should undergo parental antibiotic therapy and uterine evacuation. Supportive care for the cardiovascular system and other organs may be essential. If necessary, surgery may prove critical for the survival of the patient, and the timing of the surgical procedure must be well decided.
