Abstract

Apoptosis is a particular situation of terminal differentiation in which the purpose is the programmed death of a single cell or of a population of cells. It is an efficient mechanism for destroying undesired cells, but it also can be seen in normal situations during embryogenesis. It seems that apoptosis is normally a programme switched ‘on’ in all cells and that the death of the cells is avoided only by some surviving mechanisms using growth factors and gene products. The purpose of this paper is to present the ways this cell death takes place, mentioning some of the molecular aspects.
