Abstract

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted viral disease caused especially by HSV-2 and less frequently by HSV-1, characterized by primary infection with grouped vesicles at the site of inoculation that involve genital or anorectal regions and regional lymphadenopathy. Primary infection occurs in sexually active teenagers and young adults. Recurrent genital herpes is defined as outbreaks of the latent infection in sacral nerve root ganglia, with reduced symptoms and a shorter course than primary infection. From 20% to 50% of patients with HSV antibodies experience recurrences. The frequency of recurrences is variable from one patient to another. The patients with recurrent genital herpes may be invalided by its frequency or the extension of lesions. Treatment consists of systemic and local antiviral chemotherapy.
