Abstract

The analysis of the most frequent forms of sensorineural hearing loss – presbicusis, acoustic trauma, and ototoxicity - was performed by prospective and retrospective methods in order to establish their incidence and prevalence. The associated symptoms and diseases, life and work circumstances, habits, and the impact of hearing loss on life quality were also studied. Higher rates of sensorineural hearing loss by acoustic trauma and ototoxicity than in more developed countries were assessed, while presbicusis, with similar incidence, shows a fast growth, probably because of the increase of the average age of the population, among other factors as higher acoustic environmental pollution.
