Abstract

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), even the second cause of hyperandrogenism, is rarely investigated and diagnosed. The goal of the study was to determine the incidence of late-onset CAH in a group of hyperandrogenic women. In a follow-up study, in which we used the ACTH adrenal stimulation test, we emphasized the corticotrope dependence of hyperandrogenism in cases of unknown aetiology or unsatisfactory response to the usual therapy. Results: we found hyperandrogenic manifestations in 21.52% of the overall female patients studied; we tested with the ACTH test in 24.55% of cases, in 14.02% the test being positive. These results point out the proportion of functional adrenal aetiology in hyperandrogenic pathology.
