Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of hospital mortality phenomenon, main causes of death, and also identification of mortality data related to hospital management involved. Methodology: We used files from all checked-out cases from all hospitals during February 2006. It is an epidemiological study, based on the evaluation of a hospital manager and health services indicators, reported in our country. Results: The mortality rate on a national level was 0.88%. The average period for hospitalized deceased cases was 8.8 days. Most of the deceased cases (29%) were registered on the first day of hospital check-in (12%) or during the very next day (17%). The average age of deceased cases was 61 years. Pathology involved for the most deceased cases hospitalized was Cardiovascular diseases especially stroke and heart stroke (15% and 10% of deceased cases). Conclusion: Hospital departments with the most deceased cases were: Internal medicine, Neurology, and Surgery, responsible for 15-19% of all deaths registered to the national level.
