Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an uncommon gastrointestinal tract disease. The diagnosis can be difficult in the absence of a high index of suspicion. The disease is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastro-intestinal wall. The clinical presentation varies with the segment of gastrointestinal tract interested. A combination of acute or recurrent digestive symptoms with peripheral hypereosinophilia, in the presence of atopy may suggest the diagnosis. Oral steroids can be still considered as first line treatment. Unfortunately relapses are quite common, and a long-term treatment is required. It is important for physicians to know the natural history of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, in order to avoid unnecessary surgery. This review summarizes the current knowledge of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, including the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria and treatment.Published
