Abstract

Scabies have been a problem for humans since before the first millennium. Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic infection caused by the arthropod Sarcoptes scabies, an obligate parasite on humans. Transmission is predominantly through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, but indirect contact through fomites such as infested bedding or clothing. The main symptom is itching, which is worse at night. Scabies may have atypical presentations in children, the elderly, and immunosuppressed individuals. This is why scabies may be mistaken for other skin diseases such as prurigo, eczema, drug reactions, or contact dermatitis.
