Abstract

There is overwhelming evidence that the use of antipsychotic drugs significantly improves outcomes, particularly with the risk of relapse. Conventional antipsychotics were developed in the 1950s and led to fewer relapses and hospitalizations. The patient receiving depot conventional antipsychotics developed in the 1960s experience better evolution compared with oral equivalent. Atypical antipsychotics were introduced in the 1990s and, despite high costs have significant advantages over conventional agents about positive and negative symptoms. They also have an improved safety profile compared with older agents, particularly about extrapyramidal symptoms.
