Abstract

The population aged 65 and over is expected to increase from 33.5 million in 1995 to 39,4 million in 2010 and to over 69 million by 2030; with these increases will come a virtual epidemic of aged-related diseases. Some of the most frightening of these diseases are the progressive dementing disorders in which the very substance of lives experiences – our ability to make memories, to communicate with our families and friends, or even to maintain the essence of our identity – are lost.
