Abstract

The relationship between obesity, structural abnormalities of the heart, and miocardial dysfunction were recently described as “obesity cardiomiopathy” occurring in the absence of hypertension and coronary heart disease. Recent data shows high risk in the development of heart failure in obese and overweight subjects. The pathogenic mechanisms of myocardial dysfunction in obese people are multiple and include abnormalities of adipocitokine levels, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation.
