Abstract

Bronchial asthma is usually associated with high sputum eosinophils levels. One important goal of asthma treatment is to obtain total control. The authors investigated if the use of sputum cell counts can guide the treatment as well as clinical parameters. 31 adults with asthma in all stages of severity were examined before and after two month of inhaled corticosteroids. At each visit, all patients underwent clinical exam, spirometry and induced sputum. All patients showed significant improvement in symptoms on Asthma Control Test questionary, pulmonary function and obtain total control after GINA criteria. Corticosteroids therapy has a positive impact only on eosinophils from induced sputum but without achieving control of bronchial inflammation. Induced sputum cell counts can be used to improve the management of asthma treatment.
