Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity ROP is a vascular retinal disease which is one of the leading causes of blindness in children. It affects premature babies born with very low birth weight (under 1500g) and incomplete vascularisation of the retina. The incidence of blindness through ROP is variable between different countries and is influenced by the quality of neonatal care and the efficiency of screening and treatment. This is a retrospective study of 367 consecutive patients examined at Brasov Maternity between Jan 2001 and Oct 2007 and its purpose is to analyze the results of the photocoagulation treatment on the most aggressive form of ROP- aggressive posterior ROP or zone 1 ROP.
