Abstract

Cigarette smoking is unequivocally the largest and most important known modifiable risk factor for the fetus. The effects of cigarettes on the pregnant women and developing foetus are numerous with a wide range of sequel that will remain with the foetus for the rest of her life. A pregnant woman informed of the possible long term effects of smoking on her child may be more motivated to stop smoking than at other times of her life. Education to decrease smoking in pregnant women is important and can provide to both mother and unborn child. However, smoking remains an individual choice.
