Abstract

In the XXth century, lady-doctors also began to practice forensic medicine, «conquering» previously «masculine» medical domains. Romanian medical history considers Dr. Maria Ropală Cickersky (1881- 1973) the first woman-forensic physician in Europe, and among the first in the world. She graduated the Iaşi Faculty of Medicine (1907) with a thesis in forensic medicine, conducted by Professor George Bogdan. In 1919, she became assistant professor of Legal Medicine at the same Faculty and closely collaborated with professor Bogdan, founder of Romanian forensic medicine and medical deontology. In 1927, she specialized in Paris in legal medicine and psychiatry with the celebrated professors Victor Balthazard and Henri Claude, respectively. She was promoted lecturer and forensic physician of the Iaşi Court of Justice. A corresponding member of the French Society of Legal Medicine, she helped professor Bogdan edit the first Romanian handbook of Legal Medicine. International specialty journals, mostly French ones, published her papers.
