Abstract

Mental illness is said to be the number one problem in Western societies. As a society we are constantly indoctrinated by ‘mental health experts’ about its importance and dramatically incrementation. The concept of mental illness is freely used in all media, which present immoral or illegal behavior as a signs of mental illness. We hear about famous people to have been mentally ill. The popularity of psychotherapy is also rapidly increasing. At the same time it is difficult to answer the questions: ‘What is mental illness?’, ‘Is mental illness an illness?’, ‘Who is mentally ill?’. The paper presents the basic ideas of the so-called ‘antipsychiatry’ movement and its critic of the concept of ‘mental illness’.
