Women in view of young men in eastern part of Turkiye

Abstract

Background: Violence can be described as the force directed to the physical and / or psychological wholeness of the person. Violence is an important society health problem which increases gradually and that can be seen in every part of the human life. The most common form of violence is the familial violence which is being applied by man against woman and child. Aim: This research has been planned descriptive as to determine the perceptions of male students directed to woman in Kars School of Health in Kars University. Methods: This study has been applied to 117 of 191 male students who have been accepted to descriptive in Kars School of Health between 10 – 20 February 2008, to the students of Nursing and Health Official departments who were still students in 2007 and 2008 Training and education school year. In the research; there has been a questionnaire including 34 questions which have been developed by the researchers after a literature scanning. There are 10 questions in the questionnaire in which socio- demographic data are requested, 6 questions about the role of the woman in the society which students can express their opinions, and 18 questions in which they can point out their attitudes about the violence against woman. There have been used SPSS 11.5 program and percentage calculation in the statistically analysis of the data. Results: The average of the students participated in this study 22.0 ± 2.10.54.3% of the students view the basic role of the woman to support her husband and child, and 37% said yes to the view “Man can beat his wife in some definite conditions”, 24.1% of the students determined the positions in which woman can be beaten while showing some behaviours which aren’t suitable for moral rules. While 65% think that the women may spend all of their money as they wish, and it has been determined that 44.8 % approve the honor murders. In this study; 52.6% of the students determined that they witnessed violence in any phase of their life and 26.6 % determined this condition as a physical violence. Conclusion: In this study; it is remarkable that 44.8% of the male students in Kars School of Health in Kars University approve the honor murders, and support the view of “Men can beat their wives in some definite conditions” and 52.6 % of them witnessed to the violence. It has been determined that the students have limited knowledge about the violence against women and sexual prejudices. There has been arranged a seminary to the students about the violence against woman and equality of woman and man, and has been reached the view point of; the students may be trained by education about the definition of violence and conditions including violence, and direct them to the information services.
