Abstract

Microbes exist in a diversity of physical and chemical environments. In order to survive, they must adjust to a diversity of environmental factors. Study of the ways in which microbes adapt to a variety of external factors allows us to understand the reasons why particular organisms may persist in a particular environment. Study of the effects of environmental factors on microbes also allows us to understand the limits of their physiological abilities. In addition, study of the effects of environmental factors on microbes allows understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying psychological responses. The most important factors are: temperature, pH and the PMF, oxygen, osmolarity, physical pressure, radiation and the mechanisms off cell interaction with radiation, radiation resistance and nutrient limitation.
