Abstract

Hypertension affects a substantial proportion of the adult population worldwide (more than one in four adults older than 20 years) and represents one of the major causal risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease, remaining a significant public health problem. The number of hypertensive individuals who are receiving treatment and whose hypertension is controlled remains far below optimal levels. Non-compliance with antihypertensive therapy, part due to the side effects, represents a problem, because between 20 and 80% of hypertensive patient do not adhere to the recommendation. The new guidelines which recommend using of low doses and association of antihypertensive drugs lowers the side effects and increase the adherence to treatment.
