Abstract

Environmental factors play an important role in human reproduction, affecting fertility, birth outcome and even having long term effects on the cognitive and social development of children exposed to pollutants. A large number of women are exposed to pollutants weather it’s in the work place or at home and that can have serious consequences on reproductive health. Environmental factors that have been implicated in adverse pregnancy outcome include metals like lead and mercury, air pollutants, organic solvents, radiation, pesticides and most importantly smoking. All of these factors have been associated with an increased risk of abortion, stillbirth, low birth weight, preterm delivery and congenital defects. The link between environmental factors and poor reproductive outcome is apparent but sometimes may be difficult to prove.
