Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice, accounting for approximately one third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbances. AF is highly prevalent and growing. AF is associated with an increased long-term risk of stroke, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. Management of patients with AF involves 3 objectives: rate control, prevention of thromboembolism, and correction of the rhythm disturbance. The new paradigm include rate and rhythm control, mostly normal sinus rhythm if it’s possible and appropriate anticoagulation according to the risk of bleeding.
