Abstract

Fragile sites (FSs) are heritable gaps and breaks in chromosomes generated in vivo or by specific culture conditions. They are classified as rare or common depending on their frequency within the population. For the human genome, there are 31 rare FSs and 88 common FSs identified. Several rare or common FSs have been molecularly characterized, but few have been studied extensively. This study aimed to summarize the most important and extensively studied FSs and their relation to human pathology. Keywords:
