Abstract

Objective: to analyze variance between lacunar and territorial stroke subtypes for levels of some oxidative stress markers. Patients and methods: a prospective study was done on a group of 55 patients with acute ischemic stroke, compared with a control lot of 19 healthy subjects. We assessed markers of oxidative stress - albumin, uric acid, copper, TAS (Total Antioxidant Status) - initially and 2 months after the onset of stroke, and tried to find if there is any correlation between them or with the neurologic deficit. Results and conclusions: For the whole lot, levels of TAS and albumin were initially significantly lower than in controls and 2 months after the stroke, higher than initially, but still lower than in controls. Levels of albumin, uric acid, and TAS were not significantly lower in patients with territorial infarcts. From the individual oxidative stress markers, only albumin correlated significantly with TAS at both determinations.
