Abstract

Thrombo-embolic complications after orthopedic surgery have a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of the patients undertaking these procedures; multidisciplinary teams which include cardiologists and intensive care physicians are required for proper diagnosis and treatment of thromboembolism. The problem is such complex that numerous attempts have been made in order to unify the thrombo-prophylaxis guides, but there are still a lot of controversial aspects. The first step in order to establish a valid thrombo-prophylaxis is to have a correct and individual assessment of each patient undertaking orthopedic surgery, cumulating the specific risk of the patient with that of the procedure. It is absolutely necessary to identify all the risk factors of each patient with a double purpose: inclusion in a specific risk category and implement the proper means to neutralize each of these risk factors.
