Abstract

High-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) is considered a precursor lesion to prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to identify the association of HGPIN with prostate cancer in terms of coincidental occurrence in the same gland. The study group consisted of 170 cases of prostate cancer. Gleason score was evaluated on hematoxylin and eosin-stained, 5 μm thick, random sections from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks. The frequency of prostate carcinomas associated with foci of HGPIN decreased significantly (p<0,0001) with increasing tumor malignancy. The results demonstrate that HGPIN was significantly and positively associated with the presence of cancer in the transurethral resection specimens, offering strong evidence that high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia is a precursor lesion to the development of invasive prostatic carcinoma.
