Abstract

Leptin is a hormonal factor that signals the reproductive system's nutritional status. The presence of leptin receptors at both the hypothalamic-pituitary and ovary strengthens the hypothesis regarding the role of leptin in reproduction. In the hypothalamus, the leptin targets are the neuropeptide-Y (NPY) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), both involved in the regulation of body weight and reproduction. The inhibition of GnRH, with a subsequent decreased secretion of LH and FSH secretion, could partially cause infertility. Leptin may be an active factor in the pathogenesis of PCOS and endometriosis, which are two major causes of primary infertility.
