Abstract

Pregnancy is a unique physiologic state that is associated with profound alterations in maternal metabolic, endocrine, and vascular function, designed to ensure the delivery of appropriate energy and nutrition to the developing fetus. In this context, the role of the fat-derived hormone adiponectin is of great interest. Adiponectin has pleiotropic effects on the regulation of energy homeostasis, systemic inflammation, and vascular function. In this review, we underlined the role of adiponectin in human gestation and the relation between its levels and preeclampsia. The results of the studies we investigated support the theory that increased levels of adiponectin are present in preeclamptic patients. Adiponectin is an adipokine that is down-regulated in the presence of obesity. Preeclampsia is a condition in which the strong link between hypoadiponectinemia and obesity is disrupted and regulation of adiponectin multimers production by adipose tissue is altered in preeclampsia.
