Abstract

Tuberculosis is a classic example of a social disease. In the first half of the twentieth century in Romania, tuberculosis morbidity was recorded in official statistics for tens of thousands of patients, a number far exceeded by the values assumed to be real. Tuberculosis mortality reached 10% of overall mortality. These data justify the fight held against this social scourge, struggles which involved medical and political figures of the time. Although theoretical initiatives have been remarkable, the material possibilities were unable to keep pace.
