Abstract

Along with the positive and negative symptoms, cognitive deficits are also an important aspect of schizophrenia. Cognitive impairment is a consequence of structural and functional abnormalities caused by changes in the brain circuits. These deficits are closely correlated with long-term functional outcomes. Aims: The overall aim of the study was to investigate the literary fluency in a number of 70 patients with acute schizophrenia admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital Braşov, between 1 August 2011-1 March 2012. Methods: It was a prospective analytical study type between 1 August 2011 and 1 March 2012. The group was composed of a total of 70 patients admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital Braşov, diagnosed with schizophrenia in acute exacerbation. With a cognitive battery, we have evaluated the major components of cognition. Results: Literary fluency proved to be clearly impaired in patients with schizophrenia evaluated. They received an average of 8.03 and 8.73 words from the first measurement to the second measurement compared to 15 to 20 words as normal. The analysis shows a significant correlation between fluency scores and literary age. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant correlation between the scores of the series and the type of schizophrenia. Scores obtained by patients with paranoid schizophrenia are better, being less affected by literary fluency in them. Linking literary fluency scores at both determinations performed in hospital treatment revealed a statistically significant correlation only when treated with clozapine. This was the only antipsychotic which improved the scores on the second assessment after a week.
