Abstract

In the peritoneal fluid of patients with endometriosis, it can be found increased amounts of activated macrophages that are secreting cytokines and growth factors, involved in implantation and ectopic endometrial tissue invasion. In this paper, we synthesized the roles of interleukins 1, 6, and 8, proteins with complex functions in the maintenance and development of endometriosis lesions. Interleukin 1 is involved in the disease pathogenesis by activating the inflammatory cascade and by spreading the endometriosis implants mediated by pro-inflammatory stimuli, chemokines, growth factors, and angiogenic factors. Interleukin 6 is an important mediator of the acute phase of inflammation and angiogenesis during folliculogenesis and forming decidua. It is found in increased amounts in the peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis and correlates with the severity of the disease. Interleukin-8 is also secreted in increased amounts in the peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis and its level correlates with the severity of the disease. The important role is played by the receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2. It has been shown that their expression is increased in ectopic endometrial tissue compared to the healthy endometrium.
