Abstract

Epidemiological studies suggest that almost the entire world population has suffered or suffer from one or another form of periodontitis. The permanent tooth affected by caries in children has skyrocketed. The article is a brief overview of the issues related the epidemiology of dental caries and periodontitis, based on the literature in order to understand the phenomenon represented by some of the most common human diseases and their implications on the health of the population. Understanding the factors that influence the occurrence of periodontitis underpins the development of health education programs capable of improving the health of the population and to assure the development agenda at the institutional level to be involved not only dentists but also general medical practitioners or teachers from the level of education, especially preschool, and school.
