Abstract

Focusing attention on education for health, with the topic on obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) we can improve human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the OSAS patient's characteristics. We conducted an observational, descriptive, retrospective study in the Sleep Laboratory of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Iuliu Hatieganu", in 2010. Of all 148 subjects, 79.05% were males; 89.19% - were between 30-69 years of age. The mean neck circumference was 45.97± 5.31 cm and the mean abdominal circumference was 116.36±17.26 cm. More than half of the subjects (55.14%) had severe OSAS with apnoea hypopnea index >30 events/sleep hour. There is a significant statistical correlation between AHI and neck circumference, abdominal circumference, medium oxygen saturation, minimum oxygen saturation, (p=0.000), and Epworth Sleep Scale (p=0.001). The need for knowledge about OSAS and the importance of Sleep Laboratories are topics that need to be improved in order to have great education for health.
