Abstract

Peptic ulcer disease is not so prevalent in the pediatric population; only 5 in 2500 admission in a year are due to this pathology. We are presenting the case of a 6-year-old boy that was transferred to our department with the diagnostic of acute abdomen not related to surgical problems. At admission, the child was malnourished and had serious dental problems, with diffuse abdominal pain hematemesis, and melena. Initial lab exams were normal but on the second day of admission reveal normochromic, microcytic anemia negative and the H. pylori antigen stool test came negative. The upper endoscopy showed gastric angiodysplasia and signs of peptic ulcer. The treatment was according to international protocols and the evolution of the patient was favorable. Even though peptic ulcer disease and gastric angiodysplasia are rarely encountered in the pediatric population, we must include them in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal syndrome especially when there is an important psychological component.
