Abstract

Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease as it is known is part of thyroid inflammatory diseases and is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. The incidence is increasing slightly, meeting more frequently in middle-aged women. Hashimoto's disease is characterized by morphological changes in the thyroid gland and hormonal changes associated with high levels of antithyroid antibodies. Hypothyroidism is associated with changes in the menstrual cycle, typically oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea. Even in these circumstances, ovulation and pregnancy can be obtained spontaneously. It affects also the pregnancy, being a risk factor for various complications. Elastography is a new method used in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which improves the diagnosis, resulting in a decrease in the number of biopsies. Supplements of selenium have an increased efficacy when administrated concomitantly with levothyroxine.
