Abstract

Physiotherapy or physical therapy has a history of about 900 years in Romania. The first written evidence refers to the existence of the Herculane Baths and the implementation of some physiotherapy procedures since the year 106, but this medical branch developed especially at the end of the 19th century, beginning with the 20th century, with the expansion of this specialty on the territory of Europe. Medical gymnastics developed as a result of physical training in military schools and was later re-considered as a method of prevention and treatment for various illnesses. Balneotherapy has spread along with mineral water research, and electrotherapy was the last branch of physiotherapy that appeared in our country.
