Abstract

In daily dental practice, we encounter children with poor oral hygiene and multiple decays. Starting from the premise that these situations occur due to lack of education in oro-dental health, the purpose of this study was to analyze the knowledge in oral hygiene of pupils in classes I to VIII. A cohort of 100 pupils of rural and urban origin was evaluated. We performed a descriptive observational study using a structured questionnaire of 20 items, questions with pre-formulated answers on visits to the dentist, oral hygiene notions, and habits. The collected data were statistically processed. There were some significant differences between the two environments but the knowledge regarding oro-dental hygiene and the correct brushing techniques proved to be poor in both environments. The study indicates an acute necessity of consistent, systematic, and long-term prevention programs, knowing that the child’s oral health supports the dental-periodontal status of the future adult.
