Abstract

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy with characteristic changes in the optic nerve with progressive loss of visual capacity. Increased intraocular pressure is the main glaucoma risk factor. The goal of treatment is to maintain vision, lowering intraocular pressure with topical treatment, which affects the ocular surface. Aim of the study: Evaluation of dry eye syndrome and the role of preservatives in ocular surface damage. Material and method: A retrospective study on a group of 113 patients with topical treatment. Results and conclusions: The main symptom was eye burn (37.16%). Eye surface damage was present in 56.64% of cases. The main favoring factors are the duration of treatment and the type of drugs. The symptoms weren’t present in 11.86% of patients treated with prostaglandin analogs without preservatives. In 89.38% of patients treated with artificial tears, the symptoms improved, demonstrating the role of artificial tears in antiglaucoma treatment.
