Abstract

Influenza, acute respiratory illness, very contagious by air, that can cause severe complications (especially respiratory) and death, can be prevented by non-specific measures and vaccination, recommended to all people, in particular to groups at risk for severe forms (children, pregnant women, elderly, people who have various chronic medical conditions). We performed a retrospective study, with the analysis of some epidemiological and clinical aspects of influenza cases in adults hospitalized at the Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital of Brasov in Dec. 2016-May 2017. There have been hospitalized 100 patients, 79% from the urban area, without a significant gender difference, with the highest frequency in January – 47% cases, 62% aged 18-45 years, and 53% cases with influenza A virus. Respiratory damage was diagnosed in 76% of patients, dominated by interstitial pneumonia – in 58% of cases. Acute respiratory failure presented in 23% of cases. Evolution was favorable in all cases. Influenza vaccination prevents illness and hospitalization.
