Abstract

The overall annual incidence of acute HCV infection is difficult to estimate, especially when most of the patients are asymptomatic. Hepatitis C is estimated to infect 71 million people worldwide, with approximately 55-85% of them evolving into a chronic infection with a 15-30% risk of developing cirrhosis within two decades. Specific prophylaxis against hepatitis C would lead to better management of the financial resources currently used to treat the infection. The delay in developing a vaccine, despite the efforts of researchers around the world, is due to both the unique viral structure and the difficulty of enrolling people at risk in vaccination trials but also to the lack of a specific marker that offers protection.
