Abstract

Cervical (neck) masses are common reasons for the presentation of pediatric patients to a pediatrician. Approximately 80% are benign, with infectious etiologies predominating. History and physical examination, and localization of the mass can narrow the diagnostic probabilities. If not responding to antibiotic treatment for presumed inflammatory cause, extensive evaluation has to be urged. Neuroblastoma is the most common solid malignant tumor in childhood, primarily seen in infants, with often favorable prognoses. Primary cervical neuroblastoma is infrequent, accounting for 2-6% of all neuroblastomas. The most important prognostic factors are age at diagnosis and INSS disease stage (International Neuroblastoma Staging System). Retropharyngeal neuroblastomas are rarely documented, in small case reports. We report a case of a growing neck mass in the retropharyngeal space, in an 8-month-old infant that has been shown to be a neuroblastoma
