Abstract

Meningococcal disease is of epidemiological importance through possible evolution as an invasive form that can lead to long-term disability or even a fatal progression even in healthy individuals up to the time of infection, including in non-comorbid persons. The difficult disease diagnosis is a real challenge in the context of rapid evolution. Specific prophylaxis is done by administering two types of vaccines against subtype C as well as against subtype B. Although in a continuous debate the continued application of specific prophylaxis even in the case of a relatively low presence of meningococcal disease determines the occurrence of a degree of protection among the population with decreasing number of virulent meningococci carriers which was demonstrated after the application of the first vaccine which in time a lower incidence of disease due to serogroup C.
