Abstract

Tumor growth occurs with rapid development and numerous mitoses of undifferentiated cells. As a result, a new tumoral mass is produced. The cells in the center of the new mass need nutrients and oxygen. These cells become more and more hypoxic as the tumoral mass develops. Hypoxia is the most important stimulus for initiating new tumoral blood vessel formation to provide an adequate perfusion for all the tumoral mass cells. These new vessels function not only as blood supply sources for the tumor but also as highways that allow a faster spread of tumoral cells throughout the body. The present paper presents the molecular events of angiogenesis, with emphasis on the tumor growth factors and their importance in angiogenesis.
