Abstract

Long-term sedation management in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains a challenge in current practice. Long-term sedation in the ICU is different from short forms of sedation administered intravenously or intramuscular. In critically ill patients, the stress response can cause complications: anxiety, pain and also delirium. On the other hand, these states can trigger the stress response and further increase patients morbidity and mortality risk.
